Personal Beliefs

How do you feel about marriage?
I think it's important. It's something that I always wanted to do. It was probably my ultimate goal, to be married and have a family someday. I have not worked outside the home since we got married and have been able to devote all that time to making a home and raising my children.

I'm grateful to be a member of a church that teaches the doctrine of Eternal marriage. In our church we believe that couples are not married for just life but for all eternity and we believe that after this life, we will still be husband and wife to spend eternity together. That gives me a lot of comfort. Especially, when I see couples who lose a spouse and have been sealed for eternity. You still mourn that separation and there's sorrow with that but there's so much joy and hope for the future because you know you're going to be together forever.

How have you helped your sons prepare for missions?
We read the scriptures as a family and help them to gain a knowledge of the Gospel and of the scriptures. We have Family prayer and personal prayer so that they gain a personal relationship with their Heavenly Father and also with the Savior. Their missions are something we've talked about since they were very young so it's something they've looked forward to all of their lives and wanted to do. They have a great desire to serve missions. I think also by helping them associate with good friends. Friends who have those same kinds of goals and ideals.

What callings have you held in your church?
I've worked in the Primary organization (children 3-11) for years as a teacher, a counselor, and as a President. In Relief Society, I've been a teacher for a couple of different subjects there. I was the pianist in Relief Society and Primary and also an organist for Sacrament meeting. I've been secretary in the Sunday School and I've taught Sunday School, I've taught Young Women. I was Committee Chairman in cub-scouts along with Alan who was the cub-master, so we were able to work together. Right now, I'm teaching Sunday School to the 16-18 year olds. My sons, Douglas and David, are in that class.

What are some of the things that help strengthen your family?
On Monday nights, church wide, we always have Family Home Evening. There is nothing scheduled on Monday nights, church wide...world wide, so that families can spend quality time together on that night. We also have a manual that we can use to prepare fun lessons from. So, for Family Home Evening, we prepare a lesson and we prepare a fun treat for the end of the evening. We have an outline, where someone conducts the meeting, someone does the music, and someone teaches the lesson. It gives everyone a chance to learn how to lead and how to follow and how to prepare these kids for things.

We have family meetings throughout the week, planning and organizing where we're going, who's doing what. Also, Alan meets with each of the boys, one to one on a regular basis to help them plan goals and discuss things of importance to them.

We also read our scriptures each day. We find that is very beneficial to our family to have a daily devotional where we read scriptures and have our Family Prayer. That keeps us very close together.
